Marcia Barbakoff, Berta Rubin & Debbie Usadi were my friends from "the block". Once I graduated from JHS 59 I lost regular touch with many of my Laurelton friends as I attended Aviation High. I graduated PS 156, JHS 59 and Andrew Jackson in 1965.
We played punch ball and hide and seek until it got dark. Currently living in Viera, Florida where I just retired, so I have a little time to catch-up on the last 50 years.
I was born in Laurelton and lived at 135-02 232nd St. Nothing but great memories about growing up in Laurelton. 156 and JHS 59 and then chose to go to Brooklyn Tech while almost all the rest of my friends went to Andrew Jackson. Lived on 226th St just off Merrick Blvd with my older sister Barbara. I can't spell them anymore, but I remember Howard Gilman, Carolyn Rubin, Paul Gottleib, Todd Sveslosky, Howard Beizer, Marjorie Lesk, Maxine Weinstein, Stuart Leventhal (and his chinchillas), Cecile Cohen, Cheryl Gorlick, Lynn Winston, Gloria Pessirillo, Alex Pupako, Jay Schwartz, Marsha Touger, Alan Krebs, Vinnie Oliveri, Louie Teverini, Toby Volkman, Toby Rosenblatt, Irene Platzblatt, Rona Ganz, Joel Kimmel, Joel Levine, Susan Steinberg, Helen Steinberg, David Diamond, Jerry and Arnold Tranes, Julie Goldstein, Joan and Wendy Wallach, Martin Perlman, Marilyn Feldman, some red-headed kid who liked to throw rocks at people, Zickerman's, Raab's, saxophone lessons with Vince Pendl, orthodontia with Dr. Would love to hear from old friends, will post much more later. I always thought of myself as being from Springfield Gardens but the New York Times (real estate section) shows Laurelton as extending west to Springfield Boulevard. Currently retired in Wellington, FL after spending most of my adult life in Milpitas, CA., a suburb of San Jose. In fact, Joel, Beatrice and I rode in a rumble seat to PS 156 together. It was the best place to grow up in the 50s and 60s, lots of time outdoors, hanging out with great friends and neighbors, barbeques, badminton, comic book exchanges, listening to music and comedy albums together. and I remember when our zone 13 designation first became a zip code of 11413. My best friends at 132 were Laurie Dringus, Barbara Cohen and Susy Schwarz; at 59 I became friends with Annie Defalco, and Lauri Bente (Benveniste), who tragically was killed several years ago. I remember so many things - the diversity of "treats" along Merrick Rd.; walking to jr congregation at the LJC; riding bikes with my friends all over the neighborhood without concern of any danger; the all-day movies for a quarter; Tom's Barber Shop. I have traveled a lot, raised two wonderful sons, and lived in the several parts of the country. He was married, had 2 children and now has 3 grandchildren. My husband and I bought our first home in Laurelton where we lived until we moved to Syosset in 1970. I now live in Teaneck, NJ, have three children and three grandchildren. PS 156, JHS 59, Springfield Gardens HS, Laurelton Jewish Center.the kids..many to even mention. My sister Yvette lives in Fresh Meadows and my brother Louis lives in Syosset. Married to another Laureltonian Elliot Hochman, class of 62. I lived at 224-05 137th Ave the big white house between 224 & 225 St. I used to hang out with Tom Ferrara, Joe Barillari, Ronnie Levine, Marty Blank, John Ventura, Pete Cohen, Mark Fishman, Harvey Krauthamer, Lou Kravitz, Jack Zipper, Eileen Kaye, Rhona Toline, Arlene Goldstein, Marilyn Goldstein, Carol Bernstein and many others. Miss those simple lazy summer days playing handball, stoopball, stickball and softball in the "156" yard. I moved to Laurelton but south of the Belt Parkway in 1964. My good friends were George Parker, Ira Hutner, Andy Calia (who recently died) Paul Gural and Richie Allen amongst others. I now live in Stamford, CT with my wife Rhonda Jacobs and our three boys. What a great website - gave me the desire to want to reach out to everyone I grew up with in Laurelton in the late 50s and very early 60s. 59 and played basketball for Coach Jerry Able and ran track with the second fastest kid Steve Levine. Bell for Spanish and we would just marvel at her chest. I left NY shortly after college and worked for AT&T Laboratories in Texas and Missouri. and hanging at Burt’s Busy Bee on Merrick and Francis Lewis. I have looked through all the names posted on the listing and nobody lives here in Chicago. We always had breakfast at the Laurelton Diner before heading home. Would love to connect with Adria Gross (no relation), Susan Dankner (again), Anita Bernheimer, and anyone else who might remember me.
Like "Leave it to Beaver." My brother is Louie Abramowitz. I have lived in Tampa FL for 21 years, with my wife of 40 years. I've recently reconnected with a few Laureltonians and that was lots of fun. Back in Laurelton it was Avolio and I lived at137-08 233 St. We had backyard Bar BQ's with lots of lighter fluid. I'm currently living in San Pedro, CA, teaching in Carson, CA and have two wonderful children. Also a Musician and Rescue Diver and former County EMT Instructor.
My address was 132-02 232 St.,the corner house down the block from the House of Chang, which my family always went once a week for dinner. I moved to Florida 14 years ago, but now live in PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. We had jobs baby sitting, lawn mowing, delivering newspapers, assisting in youth groups and washing cars. Ride a motorcycle with a charitable club composed of Firefighters.
I'd love to hear from long lost friends from PS156, Shimer JHS and Jackson. It is about growing up in Cambria Heights/Laurelton in the 50's. It was a very special place at a very special time and it produced a remarkable number of amazing people. Clares, then moved to Long Island..name is Rich Colozzo, older brother Ben, younger brother Donald, and kid sister Mary. I lived on 231st Street in Cambria Heights, just a block off Linden Boulevard. and 116th Avenue and belonged to the Cambria Heights Jewish Center. My two sisters, my brother in law and his sister all graduated from Jackson. To my brothers of Mu Sigma, I somehow don't remember ever seeing you outside in direct sunlight. It was great seeing Janet Blatt (little), Cora Glasser, Lorraine Leiblein, Jessie Tillman and so many others. I will definitely cancel plans when the next one comes around. about 3 blocks from me (125 St.) Currently living in Tucson, AZ, I didn't officially live in Laurelton, but having gone to Jackson, had many friends from there, including my boyfriend (now husband) at the time, Barry Di Simone. I have the honor of continuing to have relationships with several of my friends from P. While I didn't find Pam, it was so nice to see some familiar names from my youth. Barry delivered the Long Island Press and worked at Bert & Daves and delivered for Dial Drugs. I would love to hear from people who remember me from the wonderful years I lived in Laurelton. Greenspans 5th grade class began my journey into adult hood. Our family lived at 139-19 224th St., near the LI railroad station and the corner candy store. From there we left for England where we spent a year in Manchester and then returned to Chicago where we have been ever since. Played handball all summer in Mentone Park, rode my bike everywhere, even to Rockaway Beach. but spent most of my teen years with my friends in Laurelton. Can't believe I still remember the words to our PDG sorority song "for we're the girls with the pep and the vigor, too, to stand for PDG... Laurelton was a wonderful and safe place to grow up in. I have moved around the country a good deal for business.
We played ball on the street, went to Merrick Road to hang out with friends and rode our bikes all over town. I've reconnected with some and it's such fun to relive those wonderful times. So many of the names on the list here are immediately associated with a face, an event, a home, even of parents. I am hoping this site will help many of us connect with the wonderful people and memories of Laurelton. I look forward to hearing from my old Laurelton friends.
